(V tom istom roku ako Epsteinov celovečerný film vznikla v USA krátka, 13-minútová snímka The Fall of the House of Usher v réžii J. S. Watsona Jr. a Melvilla Webbera.) – Na ponuré sídlo sira Rodericka Ushera a jeho chorej manželky Madeline prichádza na návštevu priateľ Alan. Už jeho príchod sprevádzajú podivné reči miestnych obyvateľov a počas Alanovho pobytu na panstve sa zvláštne dojmy ešte prehĺbia. Sám sir Roderick po večeroch maľuje portrét svojej ženy, ale čím viac sa blíži k jeho dokončeniu, tým viac jeho žena chradne. Všetko vrcholí jej smrťou. Usher odmieta zmieriť sa s touto stratou a cíti, že niečo nie je v poriadku...
One of the first adaptations of a well-known literary work, the classic short story written by Edgar Allen Poe first published in 1839 in Burton’s Gentleman’s Magazine (Another short, 13-minute version of The Fall of the House of Usher directed by J. S. Watson Jr. and Melville Webber appeared in the same year as Epstein’s film.) – The gloomy estate of Sir Roderick Usher and his sick wife Madeline is visited by their friend, Alan. His arrival alone sparks strange rumors among the locals, and these strange impressions only grow throughout Alan’s stay in the house. Sir Roderick himself usually spends his evenings painting his wife’s portrait, but the closer he gets to finishing it, the more his wife’s health withers away. It all culminates in her death. Usher refuses to cope with such loss and feels like something is off...
