Španielsky región Las Hurdes, približne sto kilometrov od Salamancy, je takmer úplne odrezaný od vonkajšieho sveta. Tamojší obyvatelia žijú v niekoľkých dedinách okolo mesta La Alberca na úpätí hôr. Ich životný štýl je primitívny, všetci sú si vlastne príbuzní, žijú v chudobe, chorobe a biede, dokonca mnohí nepoznajú ani chlieb... David Bordwell a Kristin Thompson o filme napísali: „Tento katalóg biedy, prezentovaný v štýle nezaujatého cestopisu, pôsobí ako desivá ozvena jeho predchádzajúcej surrealistickej tvorby. O dvadsať rokov neskôr (Buňuel) poznamenal: ,Natočil som Zem bez chleba, pretože som mal surrealistickú víziu a zaujímal ma problém človeka. Vnímal som realitu inak než v čase, keď som ešte nebol surrealistom.ʻ“

The Spanish region Las Hurdes located approximately 100 kilometers from Salamanca is almost completely cut off from the outside world. The local inhabitants live in several villages around the town of La Alberca at the foot of the mountains. Their lifestyle is primitive; they are all more or less related; they live in poverty and sickness and many have never heard of bread... David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson wrote the following about the film: „This catalogue of poverty presented in the style of an unbiased travelogue comes across as a terrifying echo of Buñuel’s preceding surrealist work. Twenty years later, Buñuel noted: ‘I shot Land without Bread because I had a surrealist vision and I was interested in the problem of man. I perceived reality differently from the time when I wasn’t yet a surrealist.’”
